Wasps and Hornets of Colorado
At Pioneer Pest Solutions, we understand just how much of an issue wasp activity can become for home and business owners- especially during the warm season! The main types of wasps we encounter in Colorado are paper wasps, bald faced hornets, mud daubers, and yellowjackets.
Paper wasps are about 3/4 to 1 inch in length. Their nests resemble honeycombs that open out and downward and are easily recognizable.
Paper wasps build nests that are small compared to other wasps- rarely more than 10 inches across. These nests are often seen by homeowners as they are typically built in porch corners, between eaves, ledges, and even inside yard umbrellas and storage bins.
Paper wasps are not generally not aggressive unless they feel disturbed. However, their venom is just as potent as the other wasps, especially to those allergic to stings.
Bald faced hornets can be identified by their black and white bodies. Their nests are larger and more complex than those of paper wasps and are more often found in trees, bushes or shrubbery.
Like other wasps, bald faced hornets are very protective of their nests and will repeatedly sting when disturbed.
Mud daubers are solitary wasps which are the least aggressive of the wasps encountered in Colorado. They build mud chamber nests on residential and commercial structures. which can vary in shape and are easily recognizable.
