Rats

In Colorado the most common rats are Norway Rats and Roof Rats.

Norway Rats are also often called brown rats or common rats. They get into buildings through cracks and crevices and can fit through holes as small as 1/2 inch. Norway rats will chew away parts of a residential or commercial structure to enlarge openings. They can also cause damage to the building foundation with their digging.

Additionally, Norway Rats can expose people to harmful diseases including Salmonellosis, hantaviral diseases and rat bite fever.

Roof Rats are sometimes referred to as black rats. and can easily be recognized by their large tail which is longer than its body.

These rodents prefer to move up higher from the ground and will often enter homes through power lines or tree branches. Like Norway Rats, they can fit through openings as small as 1/2 inch. Roof rats are also capable of causing expensive damage such as tearing up attic insulation and chewing through electrical wires and furniture. Storage areas containing boxes, clothes or other similar clutter are also at risk for Roof Rat damage.

Roof Rats are also very capable of exposing humans to Salmonellosis, rat bite fever and plague.
