Spiders
While spiders are a diverse species, there are a few common types found around Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, Longmont and the rest of northern Front Range Colorado.
Wolf Spiders are easily recognizable due to their large size and hairy bodies. Despite their intimidating look, however, they are mostly a nuisance pest and are not deadly.
Wolf spiders do not weave webs and use their speed instead to catch their prey. They can invade both the exterior and interior of a home.
Funnel Web and House spiders are the most common types found inside Colorado homes. These spiders are harmless but can be a nuisance with their presence and especially with their dense and numerous spider webs.
These common house spiders are often mistaken for the Brown Recluse spider due to their dark brown coloring.
Brown Recluse Spiders are a venomous spider that is 1/3-1/2 inch long with a brown violin shape on their abdomen. Although rare in Colorado, these creepers are occasionally found in secluded areas of home interiors which can include cellars, basements, garages, and ducts. Outside, they also prefer areas that can provide cover such as under rocks, wood piles or logs.
While their venom can cause a number of unpleasant symptoms in people, statistics show that 9 out of 10 bites are not medically significant and will even heal on their own.Despite the low probability of injury, we recommend immediately seeking medical attention for any suspected Brown Recluse Spider bites.
Black Widow Spiders are drawn to stacks of cardboard, wood, or similar debris that can provide cover to hide. These notorious spiders are known for their venom which can cause a variety of symptoms in humans including muscle cramps, nausea, and in rare cases, death. The severity of symptoms can depend on many factors such as the size of the victim and the location of the bite.
Black Widows are shy and do not proactively bite, instead only attacking people if they feel threatened. The bites rarely have an outcome resulting in serious injury or death in humans
Any suspected black widow bites should immediately be managed with medical attention.
